This plant is called “bee balm” because it was once used to treat bee stings. Also known as Wild Bergamot, is a perennial herb native to most of the United States and Canada. It grows in open forests, meadows, and ditches, and is tolerant of full sun or part shade. Bees are really obsessed with the flowers and most are aromatic. They have flowers that bloom for up to eight weeks.

Purple coneflower ( Echinacea purpurea )

This beautiful perennial attracts honey bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies! Purple Coneflower has a rich history of medicinal use that has resulted in its over harvesting and decline in its natural habitat, centered in Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas. The few established populations in Virginia and Pennsylvania appear to be escapes from cultivation but they have done well in our climate. Be sure to water them until they become established. This plant can grow between two to five feet tall if you avoid planting it near other plants. Purple coneflower requires moisture and doesn’t do well in dry conditions.

Soil Moisture: Moist

White wild indigo ( Baptisia alba )

White wild indigo grows two to four feet tall and can tolerate clay, gravel, and poor soil. This plant thrives with sun and occasional watering but can handle seasonal droughts or flooding. After the winter, it will go dormant until the following spring. Despite a lack of floral scent, bumblebees love to visit the flowers, and fight their way inside the bulbous flower petals. It has alternate leaves, divided into three leaflets that are pointed at each end. Many species of caterpillars eat the leaves. Adult wild indigo weevils consume the plant and their young live in the seedpods and eat the seeds. In addition to bees, white wild indigo attracts frosted elfin butterflies and the block-spotted prominent moth. If you can’t find white wild indigo in particular, any wild indigo will do. While this species is indicative of the tallgrass prairie, it will also occur in open woodlands and roadsides. Its range is centered in the Midwest, extends south to Texas and Florida. It is extremely deep rooted and will persist in pastures and fields as it is poisonous and cattle tend to avoid it. In fact, we do warn you that this plant has been fatal to cows and can be irritating to humans if ingested. Sensitivity to a toxin varies with a person’s age, weight, physical condition, and individual susceptibility. Toxicity can vary in a plant according to season, the plant’s different parts, and its stage of growth; and plants can absorb toxic substances, such as herbicides, pesticides, and pollutants from the water, air, and soil.

Black-eyed susan ( Rudbeckia hirta )

For our more plant challenged friends, this is a fantastic option as black-eyed susan requires very little care. It does okay in dry soil and mature plants are able to tolerate clay, rocky soil, heat, and drought. Just like the other plants on this list, it’s a great source of nectar for other native pollinators including the bordered patch butterfly. It is native in DC and MD, adventive in DE, and scattered about PA, but mostly concentrated in the western part of the state. It is common throughout Virginia.

Marsh blazing star ( Liatris spicata )

Liatris is a tall perennial that is native to Virginia and prefers moist ground. You will find it in low meadows and along the edges of ponds and wetlands. This striking native plant can take a few years to grow from seeds, but their eye-catching appearance is worth the wait. If this idea of starting from a seed intimidates you, there are a few online shops that sell the bulbs.

Joe-pye weed ( Eutrochium purpureum )

As reflected in one of its common names, this shorter Joe-pye-weed is native to the Coastal Plain and can be found in eastern swamps, shores, and wet meadows. It also is found in Virginia's Loudoun County, Delaware's Piedmont, and a couple of interior Pennsylvania counties. As we move into the fall, bees need a source of nectar that lasts late into the season. That’s where joe-pye weed comes in. It’s extremely aromatic, meaning it’ll attract bees and plenty of other pollinators including hummingbird moths.

Wrinkleleaf goldenrod ( Solidago rugosa )

Similar to black-eyed susan, wrinkleleaf goldenrod is very hardy. It can thrive even in poor, dry soils. People often blame goldenrod for causing hay fever (aka seasonal allergies) but they’re mistaking it for ragweed which blooms at the same time. It is a popular native wildflower seen in Virginia. It grows 3 to 4 feet tall and has lacy flowers blooming on plume-like panicles (loose, branching clusters). Moist soils are preferred with partial to full sun.

Swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) Swamp milkweed is a beautiful plant that attracts butterflies. It prefers wet soils and full sun, but can tolerate some shade. To plant, get started in the spring or fall. Mix the seeds with sand and sprinkle them on the ground where you want them to grow. Keep the area moist until the seeds germinate. Once the plants are established, they don't need much water. In fact, too much water can kill them. Cut the plants back in the fall to encourage new growth in the spring.

Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) Known for its clusters of blue, bell-shaped flowers, the flowers are produced in early to mid-spring and are a favorite of bees. Virginia Bluebells can grow up to 2 feet tall and are tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions.

Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) This plant is a favorite of bees and butterflies alike. The flowers are a warm yellow color and they bloom from summer to fall.

Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) This native shrub is beloved by bees and other pollinators. The flowers are small and white, and they bloom in the summertime.

Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) - Beautyberry is a deciduous shrub that is known for its clusters of bright purple berries. The berries are produced in late summer and fall, and they are a favorite food of birds. Beautyberry can grow to 6 feet tall and is tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions.

Standing Water Can Be A Safety Hazard

Here are a few of the dangers to be aware of:

Mosquitoes: Standing water is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Flooding: Depending on the amount of rain, standing water can lead to flooding. Floodwaters can damage your home and belongings.
Soil erosion: If the water is allowed to sit for too long, it can start to erode the surrounding soil. This can lead to foundation damage or, in extreme cases, sinkholes.

Standing water is a problem that should be addressed as soon as possible. If you have standing water on your property, take steps to remove it and prevent it from happening again in the future.

Your drains could back up:

How to properly protect and store your outdoor furniture this winter

Outdoor patio furniture is designed to be just that - outdoors! However, there are a few precautions that should be taken to protect your patio furniture against fall and winter weather, depending on the material.

Basics

When storing or covering your patio furniture for the winter, be sure to always clean it before putting it away. If you leave your furniture outdoors for the cold months, applying sealants can save you loads of money. One big snow storm could easily destroy a patio set if it was not properly cared for beforehand.

Wood Furniture (Not Teak)

The quickest way to damage your wood furniture is to let moisture get to it, as it will seep into the furniture. Once temperatures drop below freezing, that moisture will freeze and crack the wood. To prevent this, try furniture oil and protective sealants.

You must clean your furniture thoroughly before applying any sealants. While warm water and oil-based soap will work, try this recipe from The Cover Store for tougher stains:

1 cup of ammonia

1/2 cup of vinegar

1/4 cup of baking soda

1 gallon of warm water

“Use a soft brush to scrub the stain and rinse. Avoid getting it too wet (don’t use a hose) so it has time to dry completely before storage. Dry with a towel or allow to air dry.

After the furniture is dry, complete any sanding, painting, or staining. Do this now so in spring you can focus on enjoying your time outside instead of refinishing your furniture.

Rub a furniture oil onto the surface to keep the furniture from splitting or getting brittle. This is especially important if you live in an area with cold, dry winters. Apply a sealant to prevent moisture from seeping into the wood. In the North, this water will freeze and may crack your furniture. In the South, it could cause mold and mildew. Sealants will also protect from fungi and parasites to help make your furniture last for years.”

Teak Furniture

While teak wood is more weather-resistant than other wood, it can easily attract mold and mildew.

To clean, combine:

1 cup of vinegar

1 gallon of warm water

For tougher stains, use the following mixture:

1/4 cup of bleach

3/4 cup of a mild laundry detergent

1 gallon of warm water

Use a soft brush to scrub the wood. Allow it to sit on the wood for 15 minutes and then rinse. Dry with a towel or allow to air dry. If your furniture was left outside unprotected for a long time, you may need to use a more concentrated store-bought cleaning solution. After the furniture is dry, apply Linseed or Tung oil.

Plastic Furniture

Repeated exposure to freezing temperatures will cause plastic furniture to become brittle and sometimes end up cracking and breaking. Because of this, plastic is best stored indoors when the weather starts going below 32 degrees.

Before storing, clean the plastic with 1/4 cup mild laundry detergent in a gallon of warm water with a sponge.

Wicker Furniture

Wicker furniture will typically chip over time and should be washed as infrequently as possible to reduce splintering. When it needs a good cleaning, mix a few drops of a mild oil-based soap in a gallon of warm water and dampen a soft cloth with the mixture before gently scrubbing. Be sure to immediately dry with a soft towel.

Wrought Iron Furniture

Wrought iron rusts easily and therefore should not be exposed to the elements during the winter. While some wrought iron has a rust-resistant coating, the acidic properties in bird droppings can damage this coating and should be washed off as soon as you see them.

Furniture Covers

Investing in furniture covers is a great way to protect your furniture from the damaging winter weather. There are several different types of covers, each with their own pros and cons.

After an above-average rainy spring and summer, an important question to ask yourself as a homeowner is: how well can your yard handle excess water? Having proper drainage can save your landscaping though endless spring and summer showers and months of melting snow in winter. Beyond the typical Virginia rain storms, flash flooding can be even more disastrous to your yard and can wash away the time and money you invested in a matter of minutes.

How can excess water cause damage?

Without effective drainage, all of the money, time, and effort put into your landscaping could go to waste. As snow melts and rain falls, erosion can wreak havoc. Erosion can quite literally wash away soil and landscaping. Beyond looking unappealing above the surface, erosion can cause your home’s foundation to shift. If your property is flat or has flat areas, excess water, called standing water, can pool and cause a number of issues. Standing water can drown grass and plants. Too much moisture in the soil can also cause plant roots to grow fungus and mold. Puddles of standing water become breeding ground for insects such as mosquitos and can cause discolored patches in your lawn.

Tips, ideas, and facts

2020 has been a hectic year so far to say the least. Our thoughts and hearts are with our community at this difficult and uncertain time. Since you’re home, we thought we’d give you a few helpful tips, ideas, and facts to think about.

1. Hardscape Upkeep

If you have a hardscape patio, now is the perfect time for a little spring upkeep. When testing any of the following methods, always try first on an inconspicuous corner of the pavement.

For oil stain removal , try cleaning the patio first with liquid dish or laundry detergent. Let the soap sit for 20-30 minutes before scrubbing with a soft nylon bristle brush, as this will not scratch the surface. If this does not work, use gradual absorbing material, which resembles kitty litter. This method works better than rubbing the stain into the paver, as this could make the problem worse.

Hard water stains are actually caused when soluble salts in the pavers react with rain, humidity, or temperature changes. When the water evaporates, the salt comes to the surface. To clean hard water stains , you can speed up this natural process with an efflorescence remover. This method can be abrasive, however, so be sure to follow instructions carefully and test a small section first.

Rust stains are common on patio pavers because of iron or steel that has been sitting on the patio for an extended period of time. To remove these stains, wait for a sunny day and squeeze fresh lemon juice directly on the stain. Let the lemon juice sit on the stain for five minutes. Then, scrub the stain with a nylon bristle brush. Another method to remove rust stains is to rinse the patio with water. After rinsing, pour white vinegar on the stained area and cover with a rag to keep it damp. Leave for 15 minutes and then scrub.

2. Irrigation

Now is the perfect time to schedule your irrigation system spring start-up. As of now, we are still able to operate, while following strict CDC guidelines. Irrigation spring start-up is important to reverse the winterization process. This keeps your irrigation system running smoothly after being dormant for the past several months.

3. COVID-19 Tips

There is a ton of information circulating on how best to take precaution and stay healthy during the coronavirus outbreak. Perhaps the most important practice right now is self-quarantining and social distancing as much as possible. FLAGSTONE

For a natural stone look, flagstone is usually the way to go. Flagstone is sedimentary rock, typically sandstone, that is cut into flat, irregular pieces. Since it’s not altered after being quarried, the earthy colors vary depending on where it’s from and what substances formed it. CLAY BRICKS

New and improved!

We’re excited to announce the launch of our new logo and brand identity! You’ll soon start seeing it everywhere we are. We partnered with River City Consulting to develop a new brand for G&R Contracting, and in this post, we’ll give you an inside look at how it all came together.

Why the New Look?

G&R has been going strong since 1998, but we’ve grown a lot since then. In the beginning, we were primarily landscapers, but our services have since expanded to include everything from hardscaping and outdoor lighting to irrigation and drainage. While our old logo lets our customers know that we can make their lawn look fantastic, it doesn’t represent the dynamic company we’ve become. So, to better represent who we have become in the past couple of decades, we decided to refresh our brand image.

The Drawing Board

Our designers started by sketching out all of their ideas. From these rough sketches, they chose the concepts that were most in line with our vision and refined them on paper before moving forward digitally.

Asking Around

Once the logo ideas were digitized, we chose the three strongest concepts and conducted a survey asking our colleagues and customers which design was their favorite and why. This feedback is really important to us, and it was taken into consideration during our decision-making process.

The Winning Design

The water droplet design was ultimately the winning concept, touching on nature’s elements. The leaf represents our work in landscaping, the stone pavers represent our beautiful hardscaping, and the water droplet shape itself represents our expertise in drainage and irrigation. We also love that the stacked typography of our business name is similar in appearance to our old logo; we wanted to keep some of those original elements for those who already recognized that design.

After a few weeks of development, tweaking, and perfecting, we arrived at our final design. We feel that our new brand will both inspire our customers and serve our business, which was our ultimate goal. It represents the variety of services that we now offer while staying true to our roots. We’re beyond excited moving forward, and would love to hear what you think!

3 Important Maintenance Items for Spring

The days are growing longer and warmer. Spring is here! It’s the season for cleaning, home improvement projects, and cleaning and repairs. While you were still getting used to losing that extra hour of sleep, we were busy putting together maintenance tips for your home.

Remember, you can always check out our annual maintenance checklist for a quick guide to once a year projects. For more detailed instructions, keep it right here. Don’t delay! Take a look at this list and note what things you need to do this spring season.

1. Check on your Trees

Ensuring your trees are healthy and well rooted can prevent a lot of future hassles and insurance claims. Believe us, having a tree fall on the house is not a fun experience. Here are a few steps you can take to making sure that your trees are healthy and ready for another season of shade.

01 Junk on the trunk

Taking a look at your tree’s base is often a good indication of health. There are a couple things to watch out for. First, pay attention to decay or rot. A rotting tree trunk is usually a good sign that the tree has seen better days. Next, consider the amount of mushrooms or conks on the tree. Usually there isn’t a problem, but when combined with other issues, it’s a tell-tale sign of a dead tree.

02 Brown Collar

A tree’s collar is where the trunk and roots meet the soil surface. Pull back the grass and take a good look at the collar. Notice any bark that might be missing or falling off, as this could be a bad sign. Finally, consider large cracks that could allude to structural weakness.

03 It’s a bird, it’s a plane, its a tree branch!

Sometimes, all it takes is looking up. Is your tree overly barren when it should be sprouting? Are there tree limbs falling into your yard? Those are usually bad signs.

If you’re noticing any or a combination of these things, call your local arborist and have them run an inspection on the trees in your yard. They’ll let you know if the trees need to be removed or if you’re safe.

2. Cleaning your Gutters

Clogged gutters can lead to ruined flower beds, saturated foundations and water damage to your siding or even interior. All of this can be prevented by making sure that your gutters are clean and well maintained. Realistically, you should clean your gutters twice a year and after every big storm.

01 Hardware

We recommend wearing long sleeves and gloves. Often times when you’re dealing with metal, sharp edges can get the better of your skin. Above all else, protect yourself. Here are a few things that you might need to pick up to get the job done:

Extendable Ladder
Tarp or plastic bag (optional)

02 Doing the Deed

If you’re trying to spare your lawn, be sure to have your plastic bag or tarp ready to capture the gunk you’re about to pull out. Stabilize your ladder, and put on your gloves. Once you’re up on the ladder, make sure you’re at a comfortable height, but can still see and reach the gutters. Using your gutter scoop, scrape out any debris and throw it down to the ground, or into your trash bag. Make sure you get dirt, sticks, leaves, and debris out of the gutter to allow water to flow along, down, and away from your home.

03 Clean Up

Once your gutters are cleaned out, take your hose and flush out any remaining dirt. Keep careful watch on the flow of the water, making sure that you can trace the water down and away from your home.

Remember to stay safe. If climbing ladders isn’t your thing, call a local contractor to do the job for you. Chances are, they can offer any repairs or improvements that you may not have an eye for.

3. Check for Pests

Once the days begin to warm up, be on the lookout for bees, ants, and other pests. Squirrels can be dangerous if they’re getting into your house. Raccoons can become aggressive and can lead to disease because of their fondness for trash. Bird droppings can cause serious damage to roofs and automobiles. So before any of these issues become a problem, nip it in the bud and contact your local pest control professional.

An especially dangerous pest for the spring time are termites. Termites are incredibly difficult to spot if you have other little issues in your home. If you aren’t sure, be sure to hire a pest control professional to inspect the home. Look for these 3 warnings signs if you think you have termites.

01 Discarded Wings

Termites have wings that they use to fly around from one colony to another. Once they’ve landed and establish a new colony, they shed their wings. What’s more, they will shed their wings in a single file line as the new termites enter their colony. You’re looking for a row or a line of small wings.

02 Mud Tubes

Termites need to live in very humid environment. The further North they get, the more likely they are to build mud tubes near foundations. This gives the termites a highway that’s humid enough to maneuver around your home. Mud tubes are pencil sized shafts (almost like small roots) that run up and down your foundation. A good way to identify if you have termites is to break the middle of one of those tubes. If termites pour out, that’s probably a bad sign. If they don’t, check back in a week or so to see if that tube has been rebuilt.

03 Wood Damage

Termites feed on wood and in the process, it weakens the structure of the wood; this is dangerous in homes for obvious reasons. It can be hard to spot because it’s often behind your wall. Look for small holes in your drywall, or wood damage outside, under, or above your home. If you think you might have termites, its best to take care of it as soon as possible. Termites cause billions of structural damage each year. Don’t be another victim.
